IHC 2022 at a glance
The facility is part of the project of the same name and was designed and built starting from March and eventually deployed in Antarctica in JanuaryThe nominal operation of the greenhouse started on February 7th and continued until the 20th of November. The purpose of the facility is to enable multidisciplinary research on topics related to future plant cultivation on human space exploration missions. Research on food quality and safety, plant health monitoring, microbiology, system validation, human factors and horticultural sciences was conducted. Part of the latter is the determination of the biomass production of the different crops. The data on this topic is presented in this paper. The Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Sustainability is a strategic alliance of three universities focusing on the circular economy. Master's students are supporting SMEs on innovation issues, which will lead to the results of their research being distributed widely within the sector. This will be of benefit to both businesses and students. Despite the proximity of the horticulture sector in Zuid-Holland, it is still relatively unfamiliar to university students in Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam. Faced with the emergence of digitisation and globalisation, and with issues around sustainability, health and food security, the horticulture sector is eager to forge links with scientific knowledge and employees.

His current work involves developing and applying innovative market access and postharvest research in a range of important horticulture crops such as citrus, blueberries and cherries. John works closely with industry to ensure the outcomes of his research are practical and economic. John also has a conjoint appointment with the University of Newcastle, where he co-supervises postgraduate students in horticulture, food science and technology. His recent achievements include the successful completion of important industry projects funded by Horticulture Australia Ltd, co-authoring numerous international refereed research papers and several books and book chapters. He presents his research findings at national industry conferences and at international technical horticultural science conferences.
